Understanding Equity & Equality

Understanding the difference between these two terms is central to our work together
Racial equity is the condition that would be achieved if one's race no longer predicted, in a statistical sense, how one fares.

The concept is similar for other types of equity, too:
  • Culture
  • Gender
  • Religion
  • Ethnicity
  • Sexual orientation
  • Immigration status
  • Individual experiences
  • Socio-economic status.
Equity isn't about emotion or opinion -- it's just about the stats. How do we remove the statistical predictability that one group will have an advantage over another group?  We use equity strategies to equalize -- as much as possible -- the opportunities for everyone to be successful. We do that by identifying and then removing barriers.

Equality means everyone is treated the same, whereas equity is everyone getting what they need to succeed.. Equality sounds good but often doesn't work to achieve the desired outcomes.

Thus, we use equitable strategies to equalize -- as much as possible -- the opportunities for everyone to be successful. We do that by identifying --  and then removing -- barriers.
  • Equity Example 1: Offer low-income  students free meals so that each student has an equal opportunity to learn on a full stomach.
  • Equity Example 2:  Implement targeted strategies to help qualified students of color -- who are  statistically less likely to sign up for AP stem classes -- believe that AP courses could be an option for them.
  • Equity Example 3: Intentionally expose students to female role models who are experts in math and science fields to help  break gender stereotypes about those subjects.
